Here’s something that you might not know; it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere. That’s right, sunny skies, warm weather and wonderful soil…but what does it mean? That your favorite summer produce is about to make a come back…in a big way. Avocadoes, nectarines, plums, berries and more…they all can’t wait to see you. We can call that our late Christmas gift to you. :) Not enough? How about the gift of savings? This week, you’ll find incredible Green Tag specials on delicious clementines, braeburn apples and a few other surprises; you’ll just have to pay close attention as you browse our produce department this week, or simply ask any of us wearing our green WinCo aprons.

Look at that, there I go talking your ear off again; can you believe December is almost over? As the clock keeps on ticking, I just can’t stop thinking about New Year’s Eve; how about we start a new tradition? Let’s call it a healthy treat, with a little extra emphasis on the treat. Pick up some of our fresh strawberries, then you’ll need a good melting chocolate (the one from the chocolate banana kits we have will work, so will the one you can find over in the bulk department). Once you get those two simple ingredients, melt the chocolate, dip the strawberries…and enjoy as you ring in the new year. 2013: new start, new beginnings…and plenty of healthy eating.

From our family to yours, here’s to another year full of health!
Thank you for choosing WinCo Foods.

Find fresh fruit at low prices at WinCo Foods.

Happy New Year Friends; I am so excited to keep bringing you fresh savings in 2013! With the first of the year comes many resolutions for staying fit, losing weight and eating healthy; I resolve to help you – so let’s get started!
Now if you’re like me, you love sweet treats. For a healthier twist, I recommend swapping candies with a big and beautiful Navel orange. Or how about Cantaloupe or Honeydew Melon? I personally like mine with a little salt and I won’t tell if you do too =). And of course we cannot forget Fuji and Braeburn apples on Green tag special, they may keep the doctor away – but the price will keep you coming back!
And yes, I said I like sweet – but I have to admit I like spicy just as much and wouldn’t let my friends down that enjoy it too. You know where I’m going with this don’t you? Yep, salsa. Not only is the dance a great way to burn calories, but mixing up a batch in the kitchen with low prices on Jalapeno, green and sweet mini peppers – plus Roma Tomatoes, Tomatillos, and Eggplant will really have you moving! You may be wondering how eggplant could possibly make this particular list – but you won’t after trying this recipe.
Now some of you I’m sure are thinking – moving? But it’s so cold outside, snuggling up with a hot bowl of soup sounds so much better! With extra savings on Baker Potatoes, ten pound bags of Russets and five pound bags of red potatoes you can bet I have the makings for a delicious recipe for days like that too; I especially like this one for Loaded Baked Baked Potato Soup – it has just a few ingredients and includes cauliflower for extra nutrition.
Well friends, nothing lasts forever (including the delicious ‘fields’ of Strawberries coming in) but keep up the resolutions you made just a week ago; I will be here standing by coming up with next week’s list to help – so if you need any, just ask ‘What’s New in the Produce Department?’!

Find fresh strawberries on special at WinCo Foods.

You have got to be kidding me! Yes, friends you caught me again in the midst of one of my Extra Savings moments. This time it was due to the ‘berry’ low prices on deliciously full red strawberries brightening up the department. Or was it the Roma tomatoes – or the 10oz package of grape tomatoes? Oh geez, I’m getting so embarrassed, you might not even be able to tell me apart from these bright red (and green tag) deals!

You might wonder after all of this talk if I happen to have a particular fondness of the color red, in which case I may have to say yes (especially when it comes to Price Shocker tags). However, when it comes to the mix of red, yellow and orange bell peppers – along with sweet mini peppers that are so beautiful this time of year, I simply cannot choose! And while I know I’ve used this line before (I am the Produce Guy after all), but ‘orange’ you glad that large fancy Navel oranges and sweeet Clementine Mandarins are in? They are sure to please any crowd!

Speaking of crowds – I have noticed many of you near the kale, spinach, avocadoes, apples (especially the Honeycrisp, Granny Smith and Pink Lady varieties), Crimini mushrooms, raspberries and chili peppers. This could only mean one thing – Dr. Oz has made his latest list of super foods! This latest list is of foods to “Eat Yourself Skinny”, which I know ties into many of your New Years Resolutions. I love seeing all the new ideas these lists provide and hearing the exciting meals our friends prepare; so please stop and share yours – it’s nothing new, but you’ll find me working on my every day resolution to bring you fresh savings!

I’m going to come right out and say it….it’s COLD! But to be honest, if you were walking the produce department besides me right now, you could barely tell it’s winter outside; bright-red juicy strawberries, delicious navel oranges (full of that virus-fighting Vitamin C), bright red tomatoes and vibrant greens. It sure looks like summer in here; specially with all of these summer favorites like peaches, nectarines and plums that are arriving fresh every day from Chile (did you know that it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere?)….just wish the weather outside would get the hint! :)

But it is winter and we’ll have to make the best of it since we can’t spend all of our time playing in the snow. How about a stew or warm bowl of chili? Either will be much better with a healthy mix of nutrient packed veggies. As you know, an apple a day will keep the doctor away; and a balanced nutritious diet will help keep your immune system in top notch shape.

Did you know that approximately one third of the people in the United States (yes, including your favorite produce guy) suffer from high blood pressure? Most don’t even know they are at risk. How do you fight it? Your diet is a great start. Watermelon, bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, celery, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, grapes, avocados, and carrots; they are all proven to help lower your blood pressure naturally. Daily exercising, and reducing the amount of salt and caffeine you take in will also help. Deep breathing, relaxing more and avoiding stress are other recommended solutions; that and the fact that I love saving you money is the reason you always see me smiling while walking the produce department…now you know my secret.

Well, it’s time for me to go back and pretend it’s still summer; until next time, thank you for choosing WinCo – it’s an honor working for you!

P.S. – Sweet mini peppers, jalapenos, tomatillos, and yellow onions are all on green tag this week; think salsa! Avocadoes are arriving in amazing condition just in time for the big playoff games; think guacamole!

Milo’s Kitchen® Voluntarily Recalls Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers Home-style Dog Treats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 9, 2013 – Milo’s Kitchen® today announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from retailer shelves nationally. No other Milo’s Kitchen® products are affected.

On Monday, New York State’s Department of Agriculture informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Company that trace amounts of residual antibiotics had been found in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky. After consultation with the New York Department of Agriculture and FDA, the company decided to voluntarily recall Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers, which are both sourced from the same chicken suppliers.

The use of antibiotics to keep chickens healthy and disease-free while raising them is standard practice in poultry production for both human and pet food. However, the antibiotics found in the products were unapproved and should not be present in the final food product.

Milo’s Kitchen® has a comprehensive safety testing program in place for its products from procurement through manufacturing and distribution. Part of that program involves extensive testing for a wide range of substances commonly used to ensure the health of chickens. However, Milo’s Kitchen® did not test for all of the specific antibiotics found by the New York Department of Agriculture.

“Pet safety and consumer confidence in our products are our top priorities,” said Rob Leibowitz, general manager, Pet Products. “While there is no known health risk, the presence of even trace amounts of these antibiotics does not meet our high quality standards. Therefore, today we decided to recall both products and asked retailers to remove the products from their shelves.

“Consumers who discard the treats will receive a full refund,” said Leibowitz. “We are committed to Milo’s Kitchen® and stand by our guarantee of complete consumer satisfaction.”
